Report
prepared by: Dr. Eli Brookner, Raytheon Company.
This is the unedited cover article of the summary of the
IRSI-2007 that appeared in the May 2008 IEEE AESS System
Magazine. Printed with permission of Dave Dobson, Business
Editor for IEEE AESS Sytems Magazine.
This was an excellent radar conference. 550 registered for
the conference from around the world -- USA, Brazil, Argentina,
England. Poland, Israel, France. It represents the 6th one
held by India in Bangalore. The first was held October 1983.
The latest one represents the silver anniversary conference
and was celebrated as such. Fig. 1 shows the entrance to
the IRSI-2007 symposium center. IRSI-2007 started off on
Monday with 3 superb tutorials to choose from. These are
listed below.
Excellent Tutorials:
1.“Active-Multifunction-Phased-Arrays and
Digital-Beamforming -- Amazing Breakthroughs and Future
Trends”
by Dr. Eli Brookner, Raytheon Corporation, USA (Full Day)
2. “Radar Signal Detection and Multi-sensor
Fusion”
by Prof . Pramod K Varshney, Syracuse University, USA (Half
Day)
3.
“Recent Advances in STAP (Space Time Adaptive
Processing)”
by Dr. Muralidhar Rangaswamy, Airforce Research Laboratory,
SNHE / USA (Half Day).
Over
200 registered for Dr. Brookner’s tutorial; see Fig.
2 and 3.
On the morning of Tuesday there was an opening session of
awards. Among those who received awards was our old friend
Dr. R. P. Shenoy who is a retired Director of the Government
Electronics & Radar Development Establishment (LRDE);
see Fig. 4 and 5. Dr.R.P. Shenoy, while he was the Director
of LRDE, organized the First IRSI in his capacity as Chairman
of IETE(Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers
) Bangalore Centre. Dr. RP Shenoy retired from DRDO as Distinguished
Scientist. It is nice to see that now in his retirement he
is chairman of a key Indian electronics firm, Astra Microelectronics
Technologies Ltd. (ASTRA), producing T/R modules from UHF
to X-band as well as other microwave components for radars.
This represents the new India.
The
opening ceremonies were followed by three excellent invited
plenary talks.
1. “Radar Development - Indian Scenario”
by Sri. S. Varadarajan, Director, LRDE.
2. “Active Phased Arrays & Digital Beamforming
- Amazing Breakthroughs, Future Trends”
by Dr. Eli Brookner, Raytheon Corporation, USA.
3. “Ultra Wide Band Noise Radars”
by Prof. Ram M. Narayanan, Pennsylvania State University,
USA
There
were four additional superb invited plenary talks spread out
as the starting talks for other sessions of the symposium.
These were:
4. “Multisensor Data Fusion”
by Dr. Pramod K. Varshney, Syracuse University, USA.
5. “Advances in STAP”
by Dr. Muralidhar Rangaswamy, Air force Research Laboratory,
SNEH, USA.
6. "From Array Antennas To Arrays of Antenna"
by Philippe Lacomme, THALES Airborne Systems, Aerospace Division,
France.
7. "Distributed Collaborative Adaptive Radar
Network System: First Results from the Weather Radar Network"
by V.Chandrasekar, Professor Colorado State University.
There
was an additional invited talk worth noting: “Phased
Array Radars -- Trends and Technology” by Israel Lupa,
Director (Naval Systems) ELTA, Israel. See
Figs. 6 to 10.
There
were many exhibitors at the conference including LRDE who
proudly showed their ground and airborne maritime radars;
see Figs. 11 to 15. In the past visits in 1979, 1983 and 1993,
Indian designs and productions of their own radars was not
to be seen. It was very impressive to in 2007 the large number
of Indian designed radars in production as shown in Figs.
11 to 14.
The
food served for lunch and at the banquet was excellent. The
grand banquet was held Wednesday evening and as usual India
put on a magnificent show; see Figs. 16 and 17. At the banquet
dinner after the show Dr. Brookner and Dr. Anna Poenoznick
of Poland put on an impromptu ballroom dance performance to
the delight of all; see Figs. 18 to 21.
Also
impressive to see was Bangalores Silicon Valley; see Fig.
22. Impressive as well were the many new large apartment complexes;
see Fig. 23. Also being built are new super highways to Bangalore
and a subway system in Bangalore.
Still
to be seen fortunately are the wandering bulls, camels, other
fascinating scenes in and around Bangalore including village
life near by and a safari; see Figs 24 to 39.
Dr.
Brookner would like to thank D. Rajagopal, Secretary for IRSI-2007,
for seeing that everything went smoothly. We are very much
looking forward to the next Indian Radar Symposium.
